Job Description

Crum & Forster is looking for a self-starter who enjoys being a key part of a dynamic claims team. The Claims Specialist will manage an assigned pending of various types of commercial surety bond claims, such as: Contractor's License Bonds, Freight Broker Bonds, Auto Dealer Bonds, Utility Bonds, Guardianship Bonds, Executor and Probate Bonds, Tax Bonds, and Lottery Bonds. The Claims Specialist will work closely with the bond underwriting division to assist underwriters on taking appropriate action on the bonded programs, and will operate under appropriate levels of supervision and within established authority. The position will report directly to the assigned Manager and can be remote or located in one of our corporate office locations.

What you will do:

    Adjust commercial surety bond claims by receiving claim assignments, communicating with claimants and principals, investigating claims, analyzing documentation, understanding coverage under the bonds, evaluating exposures, setting reserves, making payments, and asserting indemnification rights.
  • Evaluate the appropriate method and extent of investigation for each claim.
  • Review underwriting files, bond and indemnity agreements.
  • Communicate promptly to claimants and bonded principals/indemnitors.
  • Analyze proof of claims documents, assess coverage, and evaluate exposures on a variety of bond types in various jurisdictions.
  • Draft appropriate position letters to claimants and principals/indemnitors
  • Work with principals and indemnitors to promptly resolve claims under their duty to indemnify the Surety and make formal indemnification demands on principals and indemnitors when necessary.
  • Manage litigated claims toward a prompt and reasonable resolution.
  • Consult with management at all levels of the claims department to strategize and make recommendations where assistance and consultation is needed on claims exceeding assigned authority.
  • Prepare reports, document claim files, review and manage pending files, as assigned, for adequacy and timeliness of investigation, evaluation and reserving, and maintain a timely diary for each assigned claim.
  • Assess recovery potential and collaborate with outside vendors as needed to pursue reimbursement.
  • Provide superior customer service to claimants, external vendors and agents during the entire claims handling process.
  • Complete special projects, assignments and tasks, as assigned.

What you will bring to C&F:

  • Minimum of two years surety claims handling experience
  • College degree and a designation and/or insurance related courses (Juris Doctorate degree a plus).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with claimants, principals, underwriters, attorneys , consultants, and all levels of management are essential.
  • Solid time management skills to prioritize and manage workload and time sensitive issues regarding coverage, liability, damage evaluations, and timely resolutions.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Obtain and maintain required state adjuster licenses.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of programs and claims handling software.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Salary ranges are available for all positions at this location, taking into account roles with a comparable level of responsibility and impact in the relevant labor market and these salary ranges are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with prevailing market conditions. The annualized base pay for the advertised position, located in the specified area, ranges from a minimum of $43,800.00 to a maximum of $99,800.00. The actual compensation is determined by various factors, including but not limited to the market pay for the jobs at each level, the responsibilities and skills required for each job, and the employee's contribution (performance) in that role. To be considered within market range, a salary is at or above the minimum of the range. You may also have the opportunity to participate in discretionary equity (stock) based compensation and/or performance-based variable pay programs.
