What We Do

OUR MISSION

The Center for Communications Research in Princeton performs mathematical, statistical, and computational research in support of national security in the fields of cryptology, signal processing, network security, and related disciplines.

Mathematics

Mathematics remains the fundamental science used to create and analyze the complex algorithms used to secure communications systems. Virtually every branch of pure and applied mathematics has proved to be useful in these efforts. Even where no explicit mathematics is involved, a mathematical mode of thinking seems to be ideally suited to solving challenging problems.

In order to recruit the very best new talent, we work to maintain close ties with the academic world. Our researchers attend academic conferences in mathematics, computer science, data and information sciences, and other fields. During our annual summer SCAMP programs, graduate students and renowned professors are brought in to work closely with CCR-P researchers and other scientists on difficult and important problems. In some cases, these connections lead to continuing collaboration outside of SCAMP.

Summer SCAMP Program

The Special Conference on Applied Mathematical Problems (SCAMP) is an intensive summer program where academic visitors work with our research staff to address scientific problems arising in national security. CCR Princeton has run SCAMPs since the 1950s. Currently, SCAMP programs are hosted at three IDA centers, namely CCR Princeton, CCR La Jolla, and CCS Bowie.

About Us

CENTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS REASEARCH, PRINCETON

The Center for Communications Research, Princeton (CCR-P) in Princeton, New Jersey was founded in 1959 and originally called the Communications Research Division. It is the oldest of the three federally funded research and development centers that form the Center for Communications and Computing, a division of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). The other two are the Center for Communications Research, La Jolla (CCR-L) in La Jolla, California and the Center for Computing Sciences (CCS) in Bowie, Maryland.

Our Leadership

MEET OUR DIRECTOR, DR. WAYNE RASKIND

Dr. Raskind started as director in September, 2020. He came from Wayne State University in Detroit, where he served from 2012-20 in the roles of Professor of Mathematics, Associate Provost, and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He has also held faculty and administrative positions at Arizona State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Arizona, and Harvard University. His area of research is arithmetic algebraic geometry, and his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI). Dr. Raskind holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Cambridge in England, and a bachelor's in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.
